Exploring the Historic Yerevan Fortress with Mark Grigoryan
Ahead of the 2808th anniversary of Erebuni – Yerevan, we will visit the historic site of Yerevan Fortress, accompanied by VERNATOUN Ambassador Mark Grigoryan, to discover a lesser-known chapter of our city’s history.
Dating back to the 16th century, Yerevan Fortress served as one of the city’s important historical and military centres for centuries. The Sardar’s Palace once stood in its northeastern section. After being destroyed by the earthquake of 1679, the fortress was rebuilt, but was almost entirely demolished in the 1930s, with only a few sections of its defensive walls surviving.
Today, the site is home to structures dating back to 1906, including 17 cultural heritage sites. Among them are former barracks, ammunition depots, headquarters, and training buildings.
Together with Mark Grigoryan, we will explore the history of the fortress and its historic prison, discover the surviving structures, and reflect on how places like this become part of a city’s historical memory.
You can get a glimpse into the history of Yerevan Fortress in the attached video, and we will discover more together during our guided visit. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRXAmKCDX9J/?stkn=YnFjOXVxMWVlZzVs
